Forget about the perfect hire because it doesn't exist!

Let me ask you something: when was the last time you found the perfect person for a role in your team?
Probably NEVER, right? Look, you might know this deep down, but the perfect employee, the ideal candidate, or whatever you want to call it - is a MYTH! So if you're too focused on finding perfect, then you're totally setting yourself up for failure. Yup.
The unicorn DOESN'T exist
Let's take a step back and think about the process of recruiting and building a team. As a leader myself, I get why you set out to hire the top achievers. You want the finest talent to form the backbone of your business, and so do I. That is exactly our business model – hire the BEST. Here's the thing though: the most you can do is hire the cream of the crop from what's available on the market at the time, and even they might not be the best talent in your industry.

Ok now there's something else – take a look at the job specs, either a current or old one that you've used in the recruitment process – do you see a whole friggin list of requirements? So you want someone highly experienced, a technical genius, AND you want them to slot into your organisational culture just like that.

Our CEO Alex Tullio compares this approach to hiring and building a team with chasing a unicorn, and she's spot on.

That means you've got to take a really different approach.
The most you can do is hire the cream of the crop from what's available on the market at the time, and even they might not be the best talent in your industry.
It's all about the HOW, NOT the who
On one of our recent podcast episodes, our other founder Steve Hooker talked about the way he builds and maximises talent on his team.

Now, Steve is also the CEO of Resimax Group, which is a highly successful property development business in Australia. And he is a fantastic person to talk about this because as he puts it, the group under his leadership has seen almost NO staff turnover. Unheard of, right?

The secret to Steve's successful leadership is that he focuses on the HOW and not the who.

Rather than chasing the unicorn, Steve acknowledges that humans are all diverse and individual beings. So to get all the benefits that come with diversity and inclusiveness, you've got to make the effort of working around people.

"It's about how can we work differently, to make what is different about you, work with how we're going to work?" Steve said.

What he's saying is that you need to shift gear: get to know your people, and change how you work together so that it works for everyone. I know it's easier said than done but as Steve said to me, "The easiest thing to do is to let people go, and not help them or not work around them, but that's not actually the easiest way".

I couldn't agree more.
Get to know your people
I know I sound like a broken record, but you can't get the best out of your people if you don't know them - not as employees or a member of your team, but as a human being.

Steve said to me that at each team meeting, they'll have two staff members interview each other, where all this weird, interesting and hilarious stuff about them just comes spilling out. It's sometimes stuff that even their families wouldn't know about.

Apart from having a good laugh, this kind of connection, as Steve said, galvanises the team. It builds trust and instils a safe environment where people can be themselves.
You can't get the best out of your people if you don't know them - not as employees or a member of your team, but as a human being.
Focus on clear vision
Ok listen up! It's important to be open and flexible, right? But – you have to ensure the team focuses on a clear vision and understands the definition of success. They need to be crystal clear about the milestones or steps to achieving the desired endpoint.

So you've got a choice: put the team and vision first and change the way you work, or you can let go of people and chase the unicorn. Which will YOU choose?
